New horse virus in Sweden

A new horse virus has been reported in Sweden, affecting horses in Jönköping and Norrbotten counties.

Sweden has reported its first cases of a new horse virus, identified as the equine parapoxvirus, affecting two horses located in Jönköping and Norrbotten counties. The infected horses are exhibiting blisters and lesions on their legs, indicating a contagious skin disease. Veterinary authorities, specifically the Swedish National Veterinary Institute (SVA), confirmed the cases and provided updates on the situation.

First identified in Finland in 2021, this virus has caused outbreaks in various stables. Gittan Gröndahl, a national veterinarian at the SVA, stated that the current assessment suggests a low risk of further spread at this time. Nonetheless, the virus can be transmitted through direct contact as well as via equipment, clothing, hands, and other objects, making it a concern for horse owners and caretakers.

Preventive measures are advised, including isolating infected horses and using disposable gloves and special clothing when handling them. The potential for transmission to humans also highlights the importance of adherence to safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with this new virus in the equine population of Sweden.
