More horses have died from herpesvirus in Helsinki

There has been an increase in horse deaths in Helsinki attributed to an infectious disease caused by the herpesvirus.

Multiple horse deaths due to a herpesvirus infection have been confirmed in Helsinki, with the Tuomarinkartano competition stable's director Johanna Hรถglund acknowledging the tragic situation but withholding the exact number of fatalities. The stable has been voluntarily quarantined since Monday due to several infections, implementing strict measures to prevent further spread both inside and outside the facility.

All horse traffic in and out of the stable has been halted, with reduced human traffic as well. While horse owners and caretakers are allowed entry, movement within the stable is closely monitored to limit interactions between horses. The team is focused on caring for their own horses while minimizing contact with others, emphasizing the need to maintain hygiene and prevent further infections.

Stable workers are continuing their duties with strict guidelines in place, including frequent disinfection of surfaces and equipment. The outbreak highlights the fragility of animal health in the region and raises concerns about the impact on the local equine community, as well as the potential for broader implications if the virus spreads further.
