The convicted Skreivers resigns from office

Uldis Skreivers, the head of the Jēkabpils municipality, has resigned following a court ruling against him for document forgery.

Uldis Skreivers has stepped down from his position as the executive director of the Jēkabpils municipality after a judicial ruling confirmed his guilt in a case involving document forgery. The Supreme Court of Latvia declined to initiate a cassation procedure last week, which left intact the district court's decision that found Skreivers and former planning and development department head Baiba Vucenlazdāne guilty of the charges. As a result of the ruling, Skreivers was fined €7,440, while Vucenlazdāne received a sentence of 80 hours of community service.

Following the court's decision, both Skreivers and Vucenlazdāne have been barred from holding public office for a year. With Skreivers's resignation, Anita Moskovska, the deputy executive director, has taken over his responsibilities temporarily as the municipality looks for a new leader. This resignation comes amidst heightened scrutiny of governance in local administrations following this ruling, highlighting the consequences of misconduct within public service roles and the efforts of Latvia's legal systems in addressing such issues effectively.

The case reflects broader concerns regarding integrity in public administration and the mechanisms available to hold officials accountable. With the existing temporary leadership in place, there may be upcoming political implications as these proceedings resonate within the community and serve as a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
