Cercanías trains in Madrid between Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios restored after fire in a cable chamber
Cercanías train services in Madrid have resumed operations after a fire disrupted service between Sol and Nuevos Ministerios.
Cercanías train services in Madrid have been restored following a disruption caused by a fire in an electrical cable chamber. The incident occurred late Wednesday night, leading to an interruption of train services in the tunnel connecting Sol and Nuevos Ministerios. According to Adif, the public railway infrastructure manager, train frequencies are gradually returning to normal as the situation has been resolved.
The fire broke out around 10:15 PM and specifically affected trains on the C-3 and C-4 lines. While C-3 line trains were redirected to Atocha, those on the C-4 line were rerouted through the Recoletos tunnel. The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, it originated in the cable chamber associated with the overhead catenary system of one of the railway tracks.
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in the railway infrastructure and the impact of unforeseen events on public transportation systems. Given the prevalence of electric trains in urban networks, any disruptions can have significant ripple effects on commuter travel and schedules, underscoring the need for robust emergency response strategies and maintenance protocols in rail operations.
