Transport announces cuts to the C-5, the most-used Cercanías line in Madrid, for renovations in the next two summers
The Spanish Minister of Transport has revealed plans for significant renovations to the C-5 Cercanías line in Madrid, which will involve service interruptions during the summers of 2027 and 2028.
The Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has announced a historic investment of 1.35 billion euros aimed at the complete renovation and modernization of the C-5 line within Madrid's Cercanías network. This line, which connects Móstoles and Humanes, is the busiest in the Cercanías system, serving over 100 million passengers annually. Renovation work is expected to extend until 2031, with service cuts planned for the summers of 2027 and 2028, following the completion of tunneling works for the A-5 highway.
Puente shared details of the modernization initiative in a press conference, emphasizing the necessity for these upgrades to enhance mobility in the southern parts of Madrid. The plan promises a 60% increase in capacity, addressing the growing demands of commuters in the area. The announcement was made in the presence of the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, and local socialist mayors from the southern region, underscoring the collaborative effort to improve infrastructure.
This deep transformation of the C-5 line not only aims to modernize the infrastructure but also to significantly improve commuter experience while reducing congestion. With an increased capacity, the line will better serve the rising number of passengers and contribute positively to the overall mobility strategy for Madrid, thereby facilitating more efficient transit for residents in a rapidly growing urban area.
