Flip honors Orides Fontela at the 2026 edition

The poet Orides Fontela will be honored at the 24th International Literary Festival of Paraty (Flip) in 2026.

Orides Fontela, a prominent figure in Brazilian contemporary poetry, will be the main honoree at the 24th International Literary Festival of Paraty (Flip), scheduled to take place from July 22 to 26 in 2026. This announcement was made by the event organizers on October 10. Fontela, who was born in São João da Boa Vista in the interior of São Paulo, has made significant contributions to Brazilian literature, being celebrated for her impactful poetic works. She studied philosophy at the University of São Paulo (USP) and is known for her acclaimed titles such as 'Alba' and 'Teia', the latter winning an award from the São Paulo Association of Critics (APCA) in 1996.

Fontela passed away in 1998 at the age of 58 due to complications related to tuberculosis, but her legacy continues to resonate within the literary community. The recognition at Flip marks a continuation of honoring poetry at the festival, following the tribute to Curitiba’s Paulo Leminski in 2025. This yearly dedication to celebrated poets suggests a growing appreciation for their contributions to the literary landscape, highlighting the importance of poetry and its impact on Brazilian culture.

The festival itself is a significant event in Brazil's cultural calendar, attracting literary figures from across the globe and fostering discussions, workshops, and showcases of various literary works. By including Fontela in the lineup, Flip not only honors an influential figure in Brazilian literature but also emphasizes the festival's commitment to celebrating diverse voices and histories within the literary community.
