The Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has issued a strong geological risk alert for five city regions: Noroeste, Leste, Centro-Sul, Oeste, and Barreiro. The alert comes in response to recent rainfall, with 70mm recorded over the last 72 hours, and forecasts indicating potential for further rain between 20mm to 40mm, along with thunderstorms and gusts of wind up to 50 km/h. This warning is valid through to Wednesday morning (the 11th).

In addition to the current alert, the weekend rainfall previously caused significant disruption across the capital and surrounding regions. Incidents of flooding have led to rescues, such as a 69-year-old woman who was trapped by rising waters in Jaboticatubas. Emergency services have had to interdict a bridge in that area due to safety concerns, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by heavy precipitation in the region.

The Civil Defense urges heightened awareness in regions under alert, recommending residents take necessary precautions as the rainy season continues. Reports from neighboring municipalities such as Contagem and Ribeirão das Neves confirm further structural damage, including collapsed walls and displaced families, additionally showcasing the broader impact of geological risks associated with severe weather in the region.
