In a significant operation, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit apprehended two individuals suspected to be members of the notorious Omotaku street syndicate. The arrests took place on the Oshodi–Agunlejika–Apapa Expressway, where the suspects were allegedly extorting money from a motorist whose vehicle had broken down. This operation was initiated following a tip-off from a concerned group known as ICU – To Soul a Soul.

The agency's chairman, Mr. Adetayo Akerele, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects tried to mislead officials by claiming they were merely bystanders and revenue collectors at the scene. However, upon further investigation, their identities as members of the Omotaku gang were revealed, exposing their ongoing criminal activities. Notably, the suspects had previously evaded capture and were already on the Taskforce's watchlist for similar offences.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating street crime and extortion in Lagos. The timely response of the Taskforce, which was made possible through community cooperation and intelligence sharing, highlights the importance of public involvement in addressing crime. As the city continues to grapple with issues of safety and security, such actions by the authorities may serve as a deterrent to other potential criminals.
