Wild horses in Jelgava lack food; donors and municipality respond
Wild horses in Jelgava are in need of food due to severe winter conditions, and assistance has been mobilized from donors and the local municipality.
In Jelgava, approximately 90 wild horses are struggling to find enough food during a particularly harsh winter characterized by nighttime temperatures dropping below minus 20 degrees Celsius. As the cold weather intensifies, these horses require additional hay to maintain their energy levels and withstand the freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, the supplies of hay have dwindled, resulting in alarming shortages for the horses' owner, EinΔrs Nordmanis, who noted that only about 70 bales were collected from past season's harvest, which quickly became insufficient in light of the biting cold and snow.
To address this critical food shortage, the horse owner sought financial assistance but was unable to secure a loan from the bank. However, public awareness about the situation has prompted a remarkable response from the community. With the support of generous donors and local efforts, Nordmanis was able to procure an initial supply of 150 bales of hay. While this supply will only last for two weeks, the community's willingness to assist has been a pleasant surprise.
This incident highlights the importance of community involvement in times of crisis. The generosity demonstrated suggests a strong social fabric in Jelgava, encouraging public engagement to ensure the survival of these wild horses through harsh weather conditions. It also raises awareness about the needs of local animal care amid environmental challenges, urging a more sustained public initiative for not only current needs but also future preparations as winters grow more severe.
