In Jūrmala, a woman has had 25 dogs taken from her kept in darkness and cold; the animals are recovering in a shelter
In Jūrmala, 25 dogs were rescued from appalling conditions where they were kept in cold, dark surroundings without basic necessities.
In Jūrmala, Latvia, 25 dogs have been rescued from a horrific living situation where they were kept in a house devoid of electricity and water, surrounded by filth. The shelter manager, Astrīda Kārkliņa, reported that the environment was characterized by complete darkness and neglect, with the dogs living in constant fear, having to dash from corner to corner. Many of the dogs were found to be severely unsocialized and terrified, some infested with internal parasites and suffering under the burden of overgrown nails that impeded their ability to stand.
Currently, these rescued dogs have been transferred to the "Labās mājas" shelter, where they are receiving care, including grooming, deworming, and feeding. While their health is being addressed and will improve, the primary challenge lies in the socialization of the animals, particularly for those who are older, aged five to six years. In contrast, younger dogs and puppies have better chances for social adjustment, according to workers at the shelter, who are dedicated to rehabilitating these animals and finding them suitable homes.
Rescuers have cautioned potential adopters that these dogs may never fully overcome their trauma and fears. The situation underscores significant issues regarding animal welfare and the responsibility of pet ownership, stressing the importance of awareness in the community to prevent similar cases from occurring in the future.
