Media: R. Žemaitaitis had been caught before regarding the party-rented car
Lithuanian politician R. Žemaitaitis has been previously implicated in a rental contract for a BMW car with his party, which violated private interest declaration rules.
The article discusses allegations against Lithuanian politician R. Žemaitaitis, who became the chairman of the 'Order and Justice' party in 2016. At that time, the party entered into a rental agreement for a BMW car for which they paid €830 per month, leading to a total cost of €30,000 over three years. The use of this vehicle for both parliamentary duties and party responsibilities raises questions regarding transparency and the appropriate use of party resources.
In 2018, the publication revealed this agreement, prompting former associates of Žemaitaitis to raise concerns. Consequently, an investigation was initiated by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of Lithuania (VTEK) since Žemaitaitis failed to disclose this party transaction in his declaration of private interests, violating legal requirements. The issue highlights a significant concern regarding accountability in political practices in Lithuania.
By January 2019, it was confirmed that Žemaitaitis had indeed breached the law by failing to declare the contract in a timely manner, having only done so in October 2018, shortly after the revelations by Lrytas. This case indicates the ongoing challenges of maintaining integrity and transparency in Lithuanian politics, especially concerning the financial dealings of political figures with their respective parties.
