R. Žemaitaitis Receives News from VTEK: Investigation into Car Rental Expanded
The VTEK has expanded its investigation into R. Žemaitaitis regarding unreported car rental contracts exceeding the value limit for declaration.
The VTEK (Commission for the Prevention of Corruption) has broadened its inquiry into R. Žemaitaitis, who is under scrutiny for his involvement in car rental agreements that were not declared in his private interests declaration. This investigation commenced in early February following concerns that Žemaitaitis may have violated laws aimed at preventing conflicts of interest and enforcing the declaration of transactions valued above 3,000 euros.
In early February, the civic initiative 'Viešpirkiai' unveiled details of a car rental agreement made by Žemaitaitis with 'Nemuno aušra'. The contract, valued at 31,500 euros, was set to be valid until November 13 of the same year but was only disclosed publicly on January 29 of this year. The revelations led to increased scrutiny from VTEK regarding the timing and disclosure of this agreement, raising questions about compliance with legal requirements governing political figures.
This expansion of the investigation has significant implications for Žemaitaitis, who is a leader within the political party associated with the rental contract. If found in violation of the law, it could not only jeopardize his political career but could also lead to calls for stricter regulations regarding transparency and accountability among public officials in Lithuania, particularly in relation to public procurement processes.
