The Uusikaupunki car factory could produce up to 500 electric buses per year – there may be jobs for those laid off
The Uusikaupunki car factory is poised to manufacture up to 500 electric buses annually, according to Jeti Industries' CEO Niko Andersson, contingent on securing financing.
The Uusikaupunki car factory has received a positive outlook for its capability to produce electric buses, with Jeti Industries' CEO Niko Andersson estimating an annual production potential of up to 500 units. This announcement follows a preliminary agreement made between Jeti Industries and Valmet Automotive for serial production of electric city and regional transit buses at the factory. The production line will initially be set up to accommodate 500 buses per year, with potential discussions indicating an increase to 1,000 units, dependent on financial backing.
Andersson highlighted that the total value of the agreement could amount to tens of millions of euros. Current negotiations with investors are crucial to finalize the deal, emphasizing the financial aspect as a key component to the project's success. The introduction of electric bus manufacturing is not just a significant shift toward sustainable transportation but also integrates economic opportunities for the region's workforce, particularly benefiting those currently laid off.
Furthermore, Pasi Rannus, CEO of Valmet Automotive, echoed Andersson's sentiment, noting that electric bus production is a suitable fit for the Uusikaupunki factory. Although the buses are larger in size, the shift towards electrification in transportation aligns with broader industry trends, potentially enhancing job creation through partnerships with numerous subcontractors in Finland, thereby boosting the local economy and providing new employment avenues.
