Asphalt sinks on street where two craters opened and worries residents in São José dos Campos

Residents of Jardim Imperial in São José dos Campos are alarmed by a sinkhole that has developed in the same street where two craters appeared recently.

Residents of Jardim Imperial, located in the southern region of São José dos Campos, Brazil, are increasingly worried about a sinkhole that has developed on their street, which has already witnessed the emergence of two craters. The asphalt began to sink on the evening of Wednesday, November 11, near the first crater on Felisbina de Souza Machado street, and the issue escalated the following afternoon. Locals express concern that ongoing rain could compromise the drainage network, leading to further ground subsidence.

Further compounding their worries, residents reported that following a heavy downpour, the initial crater filled with water, raising additional safety concerns. Recovery work in Jardim Imperial had commenced on Tuesday, November 10, focusing on addressing the second crater, which has led to the evacuation of four homes and a building housing 34 apartments. Currently, approximately 156 people are still displaced as efforts to stabilize and repair the street continue.

In response to the situation, the local government has stated they are aware of the problem and are taking steps to manage the hazard. However, residents remain anxious about their safety and the stability of their homes as more rain falls, exacerbating the already precarious conditions. The community's ongoing predicament highlights the urgent need for effective infrastructure maintenance in the face of severe weather events.
