VMD: Illegal hunting detected with night vision sights
The Latvian State Forest Service (VMD) has discovered illegal hunting activities in Ventspils county, involving the use of motor vehicles and night vision equipment.
The Latvian State Forest Service (VMD) recently conducted a planned hunting inspection in Ventspils county where they identified illegal hunting activities. These activities included the use of moving motor vehicles and night vision sights, which the VMD emphasizes is a significant violation of hunting regulations. Such practices pose increased risks to people and pets that might be in the line of fire, prompting enhanced vigilance from hunting inspectors.
As a result of these findings, the VMD has initiated three administrative violation processes against the hunters involved and has suspended hunting rights for these individuals. Furthermore, the VMD reported that during the 2025/2026 hunting season, they recorded 42 cases of illegal hunting, predominantly conducted by hunters within their own designated hunting territories. This indicates a troubling trend of non-compliance with established hunting regulations.
In light of these violations, the VMD has urged hunters to review the list of prohibited hunting tools, means, methods, and techniques as outlined in the Hunting Law. The call for compliance reflects ongoing concerns about safety and the proper conduct of hunting activities in Latvia, highlighting the need for responsible hunting practices to protect both wildlife and human lives.
