In Ventspils Municipality, hunting rights are suspended after illegal hunting from a vehicle with night vision scopes

Authorities have suspended hunting rights for certain individuals in Ventspils Municipality due to illegal hunting practices involving vehicles and night vision equipment.

In Ventspils Municipality, several hunters have come under scrutiny for committing significant violations of hunting regulations by using motorized vehicles equipped with night vision scopes. This practice not only contravenes the hunting laws but also poses an elevated risk to both people and domestic animals that might be within the line of fire. As a result of these infractions, the State Forest Service (VMD) has initiated three administrative violation processes and has temporarily suspended the hunting rights of the offenders.

During the current hunting season of 2025/2026, the VMD reported 42 instances of violations related to illegal hunting practices as defined by Clause 24 of the Hunting Law. The majority of these violations were attributed to hunters operating within their designated hunting areas. In light of these findings, the VMD has urged hunters to familiarize themselves once again with the prohibited tools, methods, and practices listed in the Hunting Law to better ensure compliance and safety.

Moreover, the VMD has called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviors or illegal activities conducted by hunters. The push for heightened awareness aims to ensure that hunting remains a safe and regulated activity, safeguarding wildlife and community interests. The cooperation between authorities and the public is seen as vital for maintaining responsible hunting practices and protecting the safety of the community.
