‘It only takes 40 minutes to walk there’... The Dream of ‘Small Unification’ at the Kaesong Industrial Complex Stalled for 10 Years
Ten years after the closure of the Kaesong Industrial Complex by the South Korean government, former employees and representatives are gathering to demand its reopening, reminiscing about its significance for inter-Korean economic cooperation.
On February 10th, exactly ten years after the South Korean government, led by President Park Geun-hye, unilaterally announced the closure of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, former employees and entrepreneurs voiced their desire to see it reopened. The complex, which represented a significant symbol of inter-Korean cooperation, was shuttered abruptly, leaving thousands of South Korean workers and tens of thousands of North Korean employees separated. As the anniversary of this momentous decision passed, about 80 participants wearing sashes that expressed their wish to return to Kaesong gathered near the South Korean side, emphasizing the historical and policy significance of the complex and calling on their government to reconsider.
