After the Lunar New Year holiday, Korea GM and labor meet again, but differences on the closure of direct maintenance centers remain
Korea GM and its labor union held negotiations regarding the closure of direct maintenance centers after the Lunar New Year, but failed to reconcile their positions.
Korea GM and the Korean Metal Workers' Union resumed negotiations on the closure of direct maintenance centers after the Lunar New Year holiday. In this meeting, Korea GM proposed to establish maintenance service technical centers in three regions and to operate a team of high-function maintenance support and cooperative maintenance technical support teams. Additionally, the company stated that it would re-evaluate the feasibility of operating these technical centers in the first quarter of 2028 and would decide on the operation based on this review.
The labor union, however, demanded that the regions for the technical centers be expanded to four areas, including the capital region and southern regions. They also called for an increase in the number of high-function maintenance support staff from 50 to 100 and insisted on removing clauses that would delay decisions on the operation of technical centers until after the feasibility study in 2028. The union expressed concerns that the company's proposal indicates its intention to maintain a policy of closure, interpreting it as a gradual withdrawal strategy beginning in 2028.
Korea GM had previously informed the union of its intention to close nine direct maintenance centers nationwide starting from the 15th of the month. Following union opposition, the company held several special labor-management meetings starting on the 27th of last month. However, they failed to reach a consensus before the Lunar New Year holiday, leading Korea GM to instruct affected maintenance workers to wait at home.
