‘Closure of Directly Managed Maintenance Center’ Korea GM and Labor Meet 4 Times but No Agreement
Negotiations between Korea GM and the labor union regarding the closure of the company's directly managed maintenance centers have stalled despite multiple meetings.
The official closure of Korea GM's directly managed maintenance center is fast approaching, with only four days remaining, yet the labor and management teams have failed to bridge their differences. The union has urged Korea GM not to stall negotiations under the guise of discussions. Throughout four practical negotiations, the company's management proposed transitioning from nine directly managed maintenance centers to three high-tech centers. These high-tech centers are intended to provide technical support to partner repair companies and will employ about 40 workers, raising concerns that most of the approximately 380 employees currently at the maintenance centers will need to change their job functions.
The union contends that even if maintaining nine directly managed centers is not feasible, they should be preserved regionally. Although no specific numbers were presented, the implication is that some level of compromise could be reached concerning the closure of certain centers. A union representative emphasized that creating a common ground in negotiations is essential, indicating a willingness to accept some closures, provided they do not entirely eliminate the direct management centers. They firmly oppose the company's stance of shutting down all directly managed centers in favor of the high-tech centers, deeming such a move unacceptable.
Following the last of the four practical negotiations on the 10th, no further discussions have occurred. Korea GM plans to start closing the maintenance centers on the 15th and has communicated that the workers will be transitioned to other roles. In response to union pushback, Korea GM has been holding special labor-management meetings since the end of last month. Meanwhile, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a rally in front of Korea GM's main entrance, demanding a halt to the restructuring and closure measures, while expressing distrust in negotiations, accusing management of using tactics to weaken union organization and pressure them for concessions.
