VSAT: no illegal migrants detected at the Belarusian border for 20 days

For 20 days, there have been no illegal migrants reported at the Belarusian border, attributed to harsh weather and reduced pressure from Belarus.

According to the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) of Lithuania, there have been no illegal migrants detected at the Belarusian border for the past 20 days. The situation has been linked to the extremely cold weather conditions which have presumably deterred migration attempts. Additionally, the report indicates a notable decrease in pressure from the Belarusian side, contributing to the reduction of illegal crossings into Lithuania from Belarus.

Previously, there have been instances in 2024 and 2025 where there were prolonged periods without the apprehension of illegal migrants. In contrast, last year, VSAT officials managed to prevent more than 1,600 individuals from entering Lithuania through unauthorized locations. This year, the number of those successfully prevented has drastically dropped to 14. Since the onset of the migration crisis instigated by Belarus, a total of 24,600 illegal migrants have been turned away from entering the country.

The influx of migrants into Eastern EU countries began in 2021, with Western nations accusing the regime in Minsk of orchestrating the crisis for political leverage. The current statistics indicate that as conditions at the border have stabilized, the extent of illegal migration has significantly decreased, raising questions about the ongoing effectiveness of border controls and the potential political implications regarding Belarusian policies.
