Perhaps the last cold night: where was it coldest?
Lithuania experienced a severe cold snap with temperatures dropping to below -20 degrees Celsius in various cities, impacting daily life and prompting weather warnings.
On Tuesday morning, Lithuania reported extremely low temperatures, with Šiauliai recording -24 degrees Celsius, Panevėžys -22, Kaunas -20, Vilnius -17, and Klaipėda -12. These readings were coupled with wind chill factors making the effective temperatures feel even colder, particularly in Vilnius where the wind chill reached -25 degrees Celsius. As the country braces for what may be one of its final cold nights of the season, citizens have been advised to take precautions against the harsh weather.
Forecasts indicate that the weather will remain chilly with slight precipitation expected in southern regions, primarily as snow, which could lead to icy conditions on the roads. A weak southern and southeastern wind is predicted, with daytime highs anticipated to remain between -7 to -12 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The National Meteorology office has warned of possible freezing rain conditions in some areas, which could further complicate travel and outdoor activities.
As a cyclone approaches from the west on Wednesday night, the weather is expected to shift dramatically. This will bring additional snowfall across much of the country, and a risk of mist formation in certain areas. Overnight temperatures are likely to remain between -8 to -13 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures may reach close to 0 degrees Celsius. This weather system marks a significant shift from the recent cold spell, suggesting that warmer conditions could be on the horizon as the cyclone affects Lithuania’s weather patterns.
