More than 50 children were removed from child labor in 2025 in Piauí; learn how to report

In 2025, 57 children and adolescents in Piauí were removed from child labor situations according to the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

In a recent report, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) announced that 57 children and adolescents were removed from child labor situations in Piauí during the year 2025. This figure, disclosed on Monday, underscores the ongoing efforts to combat child labor in the region. Piauí recorded the third-lowest number of removals in the Northeast region, ranking behind Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, emphasizing the varying challenges faced by different states in addressing child labor.

The MTE highlighted the strengthened operations of the Mobile Special Group for Combating Child Labor (GMTI), which has established a robust team for inspections across all states in Brazil. The group's mandate includes the immediate removal of victims from exploitative situations, followed by referral to social protection networks. This approach aims to ensure that affected children gain access to fundamental rights and essential public services, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding their wellbeing.

A survey from the project "Crianças Livres do Trabalho Infantil" in 2019 revealed that 51,803 residents of Piauí were engaged in child labor, with a significant portion of 25.1% of affected children aged 5 to 17 subjected to the worst forms of child labor. This alarming statistic showcases the persistent problem of child labor in the region and highlights the importance of ongoing advocacy and intervention to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
