It is not possible to have 1.5 million people in Consolação, says Tarcísio after chaos during pre-Carnival

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas expressed concerns about the large crowds during the pre-Carnival events after chaotic incidents occurred.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas of São Paulo addressed the issues stemming from the large crowd estimates during the pre-Carnaval festivities, stating that having 1.5 million people in areas like Consolação is unfeasible. This comment came in the wake of disturbances caused by two large events: one being the Academics of Baixo Augusta and the other a performance by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, which drew significant attendance and sponsorship from Skol, the official beer brand of São Paulo's Carnaval.

In his statements, Tarcísio underscored the importance of public safety and effective crowd management, highlighting the quick response from both the city and the Military Police to manage the situation. He mentioned discussions with São Paulo's mayor, Ricardo Nunes, regarding the effective measures taken, including the removal of barriers, street closures, and freeing up side streets to facilitate crowd control. This prompt action was crucial in ensuring the safe dispersion of the massive crowd.

Despite the noted issues, Mayor Nunes labeled the first weekend of pre-Carnival as a success, emphasizing the enjoyment of attendees against the backdrop of large numbers and minimal incidents. The governor's remarks reflect a growing concern over managing large public gatherings in urban areas, especially in light of recent crowd size estimates that have raised safety alarms, indicating the need for further planning and coordination for future events to avoid chaos and enhance public safety.
