MP-SP will investigate overcrowding in megabloks in Consolação during pre-carnival
The Public Ministry of São Paulo has opened a preliminary investigation into the overcrowding of carnival blocks that took place on Rua da Consolação, leading to chaos and injuries among revelers.
The Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP) has initiated a preliminary inquiry to investigate the overcrowding witnessed during the carnival blocks that paraded on Rua da Consolação on February 9. Notably, the Skol bloc featuring Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and the Acadêmicos do Baixo Augusta bloc took place in close succession at the same location, resulting in significant overcrowding that culminated in disturbances, fights, and injuries among participants. The investigation aims to assess the circumstances surrounding the management and organization of these events, which contribute to public safety concerns.
In a statement, the Housing and Urbanism Public Prosecutor's Office indicated that the investigation is focused on the incidents during the Sunday celebrations, emphasizing the importance of ensuring public safety during large gatherings such as carnival. The events were fraught with chaos, prompting officials to seek accountability for the organization of such celebrations, especially given the potential risks involved for participants and bystanders.
This inquiry comes as politicians from opposition parties, including City Councilor Nabil Bonduki and federal deputy Érika Hilton, have called upon the MP-SP to scrutinize the city mayor Ricardo Nunes's handling of street carnival organization, which falls under the purview of SPTuris. Their actions underline a growing demand for oversight in how public festivities are managed, to prevent overcrowding and associated hazards in the future, thereby ensuring a safer environment for all revelers during the carnival season.
