Cucumber Producer Grüne Fee Expands Production by One Third

Estonia's largest cucumber producer, Grüne Fee, is expanding its production capacity by one third amidst rising demand and declining sales of domestic cucumbers in supermarkets.

Grüne Fee, Estonia's leading cucumber producer, is set to expand its production capacity by one third in response to increased demand for cucumbers, even as local retailers report a decline in domestic cucumber sales. The company has announced plans to modernize its production facilities since the current greenhouses are aging. The new greenhouse project will occupy nearly a third of their total production area and is anticipated to significantly boost yields. Currently, Grüne Fee's greenhouses produce around 3,300 tons of cucumbers annually, and the new facility is expected to add over 1,400 tons to this output.

The expansion project encompasses the addition of 7,300 square meters of greenhouse space, which will replace one of the older facilities. Grüne Fee’s board member, Kristo Eisenberg, highlighted that despite the ongoing decline in cucumber sales at supermarkets, the project aims to enhance productivity. The new greenhouse is predicted to improve yields per square meter by at least 50% compared to the older greenhouse, thereby increasing the overall harvest significantly. This proactive approach is intended to ensure that the company remains competitive in the domestic market while adapting to changing consumer needs.

As the price of domestic cucumbers in stores fluctuates, this expansion reflects Grüne Fee's strategic adjustment to market demands. While the company prepares to face the challenges of modern production, its commitment to sustainable and efficient cultivation practices may serve as a model for other agricultural producers in Estonia. By increasing their production capacity, Grüne Fee not only aims to meet current demand but also positions itself for future growth in a competitive agricultural landscape.
