R. Kaunas: There are no discussions about reducing the number of US troops deployed in Lithuania
R. Kaunas emphasizes that there are no conversations concerning a reduction of US troops stationed in Lithuania, highlighting support for the Baltic Security Initiative and ongoing strong military collaboration between the US and Lithuania.
In a recent statement, R. Kaunas clarified that there are no discussions about reducing the number of US troops currently stationed in Lithuania. During a press conference at the Seimas, he expressed confidence in the ongoing commitment of the US to maintain its military presence in the region, particularly as Congress continues to support the Baltic Security Initiative. His remarks reflect Lithuania's proactive approach in fulfilling its responsibilities as a host nation and its efforts to enhance military infrastructure in collaboration with US partners.
Kaunas pointed out that since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency last January, discussions have been raised regarding potential troop withdrawals from Europe. Trump has repeatedly insisted that European nations need to contribute more to their defense spending, warning that American troops stationed in Europe could be relocated if these countries do not meet their financial commitments. However, he also reaffirmed his commitments to both Poland and Lithuania, indicating that any such withdrawals would not impact the Baltic states directly.
The context of this issue is significant, as concerns regarding US military presence in Eastern Europe have increased following various geopolitical tensions. Reports from last year suggested that the Pentagon was contemplating the withdrawal of approximately 10,000 troops from Eastern Europe, which raised alarms among NATO allies. Kaunas's assurance of continued US support is crucial in maintaining stability and security in the region amidst these changing dynamics.
