Revenge or vandalism? Fire broke out in the stairwell of the apartment building

A fire caused by a children's stroller in the stairwell of a five-story apartment building in Klaipėda, Lithuania is suspected to be intentional vandalism.

On February 8, firefighters in Klaipėda responded to a fire in the stairwell of a five-story apartment building located on Bandužių street. The fire, which began around 15:32, was sparked by a children's stroller left in the stairwell. When the firefighters arrived, they found thick smoke and flames from the burnt stroller, which was extinguished within minutes using a six-kilogram dry powder extinguisher. The fire was officially declared out by 15:40.

Investigations suggest that the fire may have been deliberately set, as the stroller was lit on fire, leading to damage not only to it but also causing soot damage to two other strollers, a bicycle, and the walls and ceiling of the stairwell up to the fifth floor. The destroyed stroller was valued at 200 euros, but the costs for repairing the stairwell will likely exceed that amount significantly.

Firefighters encountered challenges due to parked vehicles in the snowy yard, which obstructed their access to the building’s stairwell. This incident raises concerns about safety in such residential buildings and the potential for similar acts of vandalism, highlighting an ongoing issue that communities face with regard to both safety and property damage.
