Fire set in the stairwell of a residential building in Helsinki

A fire was intentionally set in a stairwell of an apartment building in Vuosaari, Helsinki, with no injuries reported so far.

On Saturday night, before midnight, the Helsinki rescue department responded to a fire incident in the stairwell of an apartment building located on Hiekkalaiturintie in Vuosaari. According to on-duty fire chief Tarmo Helander, both items in the stairwell and an exterior door of one of the apartment units were set ablaze. Helander expressed concern that these incidents might be inspired by previous fires, as he noted that such fires do not typically start on their own.

At the time of the fire, there were no residents present in the affected apartment, allowing firefighters to focus on extinguishing the fire quickly. After midnight, fire crews conducted investigations to ensure that smoke did not infiltrate the residential units. Fortunately, the stairwell had been cleared of smoke effectively. Helander commented that if residents had left their doors open, smoke could have potentially spread into the apartments, but he hoped that they had kept their doors shut.

As of now, there have been no injuries reported from the incident. Emergency responders are checking the condition of residents, and it has been noted that at least two individuals may have inhaled smoke. The quick response of the fire department was crucial in preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of the residents in the building, showcasing the effectiveness of their operations in such emergency situations.
