Busan City Says Improvement Needed for Accommodation Overbooking Platforms Related to BTS Concert
Busan officials are addressing complaints about overbooking and inflated hotel prices linked to the upcoming BTS concert in June.
As the June BTS concert in Busan approaches, the city has reported a surge in complaints related to inflated lodging prices, or 'baragijogeum', due to overbooking issues on online reservation platforms. By July 2, 129 complaints related to BTS accommodations were filed, prompting the city to conduct spot inspections at 14 hotels, confirming that overbooking was indeed the cause of several issues stemming from simultaneous high-volume reservations.
The inspections revealed that many hotels faced challenges due to the short waiting time for guests to finalize their bookings, leading to situations where multiple customers attempted to reserve the same room concurrently. Consequently, hotels had to cancel reservations from those who booked later, resulting in complaints about the cancellation of 'normal reservations'. The Busan Tourism and MICE Industry Department noted that while initial suspicions were directed at the hotels, the reality was tied to the reservation platform's operational mechanics, and they have suggested improvements in meetings with tourism authorities.
Furthermore, the BTS concert announcement led to rapid booking activity in local accommodations, where rumors circulated on social media about hotels dramatically increasing prices – up to 5-10 times on concert day. Complaints also highlighted instances of hotels allegedly forcing cancellations to raise rates, which prompted a stern response from President Lee Jae-myung regarding the detrimental impact on market order and public trust. These developments underscore the need for improved regulations and transparency within accommodation booking systems in high-demand situations.
