After MP action, Justice demands hygiene and air conditioning in maternity hospital in Pariquera-Açu, SP

The Brazilian court has mandated improvements in hygiene and air conditioning at the maternity section of the Hospital Regional Dr. Leopoldo Bevilacqua, following a public action by the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Justice has ordered that the maternity hospital of the Regional Hospital Dr. Leopoldo Bevilacqua in Pariquera-Açu, São Paulo, must implement improvements within 30 days. This ruling comes after an action taken by the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPSP) highlighting serious deficiencies in the hospital's facilities that could jeopardize the health of pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns.

The responsibility for ensuring that the maternity unit meets adequate hygiene standards and operates an effective air conditioning system falls to the São Paulo government and the Intermunicipal Consortium of Health of Vale do Ribeira and Litoral Sul (CONSAÚDE), which manages the facility. The ruling was established following a civil public action filed by prosecutors Mayara Cristina Navarro Lippel, Lucas Mostaro de Oliveira, and Rodrigo Lúcio dos Santos Borges, prompted by alarming findings from an official inspection.

During the inspection, several serious issues were uncovered regarding the infrastructure of the maternity unit, raising concerns about the safety and health of patients. The court's decision underscores the critical need for the health system to provide safe and hygienic conditions in maternity wards and to uphold the rights of mothers and newborns to receive proper care during a vulnerable period of their lives.
