Justice orders the City Hall of São Paulo to resume legal abortion at Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Hospital in the North Zone

The São Paulo Court of Justice has ruled that the City Hall must resume legal abortion services at Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Hospital after the service was suspended in December 2023.

The São Paulo Court of Justice has determined that the City Hall of São Paulo must reinstate legal abortion services at the Maternity Hospital Vila Nova Cachoeirinha, following the suspension of these services in December 2023 by Mayor Ricardo Nunes' administration. This hospital was known as a reference point for legal abortion services, particularly for cases of rape and complex pregnancies, which makes the court's decision significant for public health access in the region.

The suspension of services prompted legal action against the city, leading to a ruling in October by the 9th Public Treasury Court, which imposed a substantial fine of R$ 24.8 million on the municipal government for failing to ensure women's access to legal abortion services. This has raised important questions regarding the responsibility of local governance in providing health services and protecting women's rights in Brazil, particularly in areas where access is already limited due to socio-economic factors.

As of now, the City Hall has not issued any response regarding the court's ruling, keeping the public and advocacy groups waiting for their next move. The expectation is that the reestablishment of these services will address the previous deficiencies in access, particularly for vulnerable women needing care. However, the situation remains tense amidst ongoing debates over reproductive health rights in Brazil, and how local administrations navigate these crucial social issues will likely be scrutinized moving forward.
