With low stock, Human Milk Bank opens registration for donors in São Luís

The Human Milk Bank at the Federal University of Maranhão is experiencing a shortage and has launched a campaign for milk donations in São Luís during a time of decreased contributions.

The Human Milk Bank (BLH) at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Maranhão (HU-UFMA) is facing a critical shortage of donated breast milk, which is crucial for feeding premature babies in their neonatal service. In response to this shortage, they have initiated a campaign to encourage lactating mothers to donate milk in São Luís. The bank typically supports around 50 premature newborns each month, with a demand of approximately 9 to 10 liters of breast milk, highlighting the vital role that donations play in their care.

The milk collected by the Human Milk Bank is used specifically for infants admitted to the neonatal ward of HU-UFMA, who are especially vulnerable and rely on donated milk for their nutrition. Nutritionist Simone Nunes noted that the demand for donations tends to decrease during school holidays and festive seasons, exacerbating the current situation. This makes the need for new donors even more pressing, as the hospital is striving to maintain a consistent supply of milk for the at-risk newborns under its care.

To facilitate contributions, the Human Milk Bank has established a registration process for interested lactating mothers who wish to donate milk. This initiative aims to strengthen community support for these vulnerable infants, ensuring that they receive the necessary nutrition to thrive as they recover in the hospital. The urgency of this campaign underscores the importance of community involvement in health services, especially during times of increased need.
