VIDEO: sidewalk collapses and electricity pole falls into crater in São José dos Campos
A new crater opened in Jardim Imperial, São José dos Campos, causing a sidewalk collapse and an electricity pole to fall into it during heavy rain.
A new crater opened in the Jardim Imperial neighborhood in São José dos Campos on Saturday afternoon, shortly after another significant collapse occurred in the same area that had previously swallowed a truck. The incident was captured on video by André Bias, a cinematographer from Rede Vanguarda, showing the alarming moment when the sidewalk crumbled and an electricity pole was engulfed by the growing fissure in the ground. This latest collapse raised concerns among locals, who are already uneasy following the earlier incident.
The crater first appeared around 4:30 p.m. while the city was experiencing rainfall. It formed in the middle of the street, causing a substantial subsidence that affected both lanes of traffic. By approximately 5:00 p.m., local authorities had cordoned off the area due to the instability of the site, which continued to give way. Additionally, a water leak was reported within the crater, further complicating the situation for emergency responders and city officials.
Residents expressed anxiety about potential further collapses given the immediate instability of the area and the recent history of similar events. With ongoing rain and signs of possible structural failure, there are fears that additional measures will be required to ensure safety and mitigate the risk of further erosion or structural damage to the roads and nearby properties.
