Almost 150 thousand identity cards have been forgotten by the population since 2022 in AL, says issuing body
Since 2022, nearly 150,000 National Identity Cards have been left unclaimed in Alagoas, Brazil, according to the local identification institute.
The Institute of Identification of Alagoas reported that from 2022 until January this year, around 148,000 National Identity Cards (CIN) requested by individuals have been left unclaimed. During this same period, the state issued a total of 848,000 of these documents. The significant number of unclaimed identity cards raises concerns about the accessibility of essential services and citizenship rights among the population.
Measuring the implications of this situation, the superintendent of the Institute of Identification, Antônio Ferreira, emphasized the critical role that the CIN plays in enabling citizens to access vital public services such as health and social benefits. He explained that the identity card is not just an administrative document but a key to various public rights and services. Without it, individuals face barriers to social inclusion and support from government programs.
The process for collecting these forgotten identity cards is relatively simple; individuals can retrieve their cards by visiting one of the designated service points where their identity cards were originally issued. However, the large number of unclaimed documents indicates a potential disconnect between the residents and the significance of having proper identification, which may have repercussions on their legal and social standing in society.
