NAF to retrieve service weapons from retired personnel
The Nigerian Air Force plans to retrieve service weapons from retired personnel to ensure compliance with firearms regulations while addressing security concerns of veterans.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced its intention to retrieve and account for service weapons from retired personnel in a bid to comply with the Firearms Act. This decision was made during a parley held in Abuja, where Air Vice Marshal Anthony Martins represented the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke. The initiative highlights the NAF's commitment to addressing personal security issues faced by veterans and ensuring adherence to legal requirements regarding firearms possession.
During the meeting, Air Marshal Aneke emphasized the vulnerability of senior veterans and expressed that the NAF is aware of their unique security concerns. He mentioned that the retrieval of weapons is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and well-being of these individuals as well as to maintain legal compliance. Furthermore, the NAF is exploring the possibility of setting up a regulated armoury system, which would potentially allow some retired personnel to lawfully possess specified firearms under strict guidelines.
This move signifies not just an internal challenge for the NAF in terms of managing retired personnel and their weapons but also showcases the Air Force's responsiveness to the needs of veterans. As these changes are implemented, it is expected to foster a safer environment for both veterans and the broader community, while simultaneously reinforcing compliance with national firearm regulations.
