Defence ministry urges timely pension payment for retired military personnel

The Nigerian Defence Ministry has called for timely pension payments for retired military personnel to ensure their welfare and livelihood.

The Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, has emphasized the necessity for the Military Pensions Board (MPB) to prioritize the timely payment of pensions to retired military personnel. During his recent visit to the MPB headquarters in Abuja, he highlighted the crucial role the Board plays in safeguarding the welfare of veterans. Pheelangwah insisted that timely pension payments should take precedence over those received by currently serving officers to ensure that veterans receive the support they deserve.

Pheelangwah referred to retired military personnel as a 'valuable national asset', arguing that it is both a moral obligation and a national responsibility to ensure accurate and prompt pension administration. He pointed out that many veterans depend heavily on their pensions for their livelihoods and well-being, indicating that any delays or bureaucratic issues could have dire consequences for them and their families. This assertion underscores the urgency of addressing the pension system's efficiency as a critical issue.

In addition to calling for prioritization in pension payments, the Permanent Secretary urged the MPB to continuously improve its systems and practices. The emphasis on enhancing their capabilities reflects a growing recognition of the unique challenges facing veterans in Nigeria, particularly in terms of securing financial stability after service. By advocating for these changes, the Ministry aims to provide better support to those who have served the country, highlighting the broader implications for national welfare and respect for military service.
