Distance skier Eiduka: When everything is lost, you just push to the finish line

Latvian skier Eiduka reflects on her challenging race experience, where despite difficulties in the classical part, she managed to perform better in the freestyle segment.

Latvian distance skier Eiduka shared her thoughts on her recent race, acknowledging the tough conditions that affected her performance in the classical portion. Despite having good feelings going into the event, the difficult weather led to a struggle with her skis, forcing her to focus primarily on survival during that part of the race. After finishing the classical segment, she shifted her focus to the freestyle where she aimed to catch up with her competitors.

In the freestyle segment, Eiduka managed to collaborate effectively with a US skier, which allowed her to close the gap with her rivals. She emphasized the mental aspect of racing, stating that once she realized she was losing, it became crucial for her to keep pushing toward the finish line. Eiduka noted that she often takes risks during downhill segments since she considers it her strongest suit, and in this race, her decision to take risks paid off, as she successfully navigated through challenging parts without falling.

The skiathlon discipline requires athletes to switch from classic to freestyle skiing mid-course, which can be particularly challenging. Eiduka mentioned that her skis performed well in the freestyle portion, indicating she felt more comfortable on the snow in Italy, suggesting a significant improvement in her performance through the freestyle technique despite initial challenges in classical skiing.
