Skertsos: Greece now holds the 11th best youth unemployment rate in Europe, marking a leap in progress
Greece's youth unemployment rate has improved significantly, now standing at 13% compared to the EU average of 14.7%, according to Minister Akis Skertsos.
Minister Akis Skertsos highlighted Greece's improving youth unemployment statistics, revealing that the country now ranks 11th among EU nations in this regard. As per Eurostat's latest data, Greece has successfully reduced its youth unemployment from the highest in Europe in June 2019, when nearly 40% of young people were unemployed, to a much more favorable rate of 13%. This change underscores significant advancements in the national job market over the past several years.
In June 2019, Greece experienced a youth unemployment crisis, with a shocking 39.5% of individuals aged 25 and under without jobs, placing it last among the 27 EU member states. The average youth unemployment rate in the broader EU at that time was 15.3%. Skertsos noted that this previous high highlighted the necessity for interventions and policies aimed at improving job opportunities for young people in Greece.
Reflecting on this progress, Skertsos emphasized that Greece is no longer seen as an inhospitable environment for young people seeking employment. The latest figures indicating a 13% youth unemployment rate not only reflect economic recovery post-crisis but also suggest a more hopeful outlook for the younger generation in Greece, prompting questions about future policies and initiatives that could further drive this positive trend.
