Sudden rise in heat... temperature above normal! Why is the weather changing in Mumbai?
Mumbai is experiencing an unexpected rise in temperature, with recent maximums hitting 35.1°C, significantly above normal levels, attributed to changes in wind patterns due to weather disturbances in North India.
Mumbai has begun to feel the impact of increasing heat, with recent records showing maximum daytime temperatures reaching 35.1°C at the Santa Cruz observatory, which is approximately 4.2°C above normal levels. This rise in temperature is expected to persist in the coming days as weather patterns lead to sustained heat effects in the city.
The rise in temperatures is largely attributed to a shift in the seasonal anti-cyclone that usually resides in Rajasthan. The active western disturbance in the northern plains of India has altered wind patterns, leading to dry land breezes continuing from the eastern direction, rather than the usual marine breezes that help maintain cooler temperatures. In typical circumstances, sea breezes would start flowing before noon during this season, helping to keep the temperatures in check.
However, with the changing anti-cyclone conditions, terrestrial breezes have taken precedence, remaining active from night through to midday. This shift indicates a significant change in the climatic conditions affecting Mumbai, raising concerns about prolonged heat and its implications for the region's weather stability, especially considering the usual moderating effect of marine influences that typically prevail during this time of year.
