VTEK will decide on Tuesday whether to start an investigation into A. Valotka's statements
The VTEK is set to evaluate a complaint regarding A. Valotka's remarks about the appropriateness of using the terms 'negras' and 'čigonas' in public discourse.
The Ethics Commission of the Public Service (VTEK) is scheduled to deliberate on a complaint regarding A. Valotka on Tuesday. The complaint was filed by Danielius Ilkevičius, a member of the Vilnius district council, who is seeking an assessment of whether Valotka’s public statements align with the ethical principles expected of public servants. Specifically, Ilkevičius is concerned about Valotka's assertion that the terms 'negras' and 'čigonas' are acceptable in discourse, which raises questions about the potential breach of ethical standards criteria for state officials.
Additionally, Cultural Minister Vaida Aleknavičienė has indicated that a separate investigation will also be initiated regarding the comments made by Valotka, with a specially formed committee tasked to examine the situation. This comes in light of the public backlash against the use of such terms, which many consider offensive and derogatory. Valotka's comments have sparked a broader conversation about race, language, and the responsibilities of public figures to uphold ethical standards.
The outcome of these inquiries could lead to significant implications for Valotka's position and influence within the VKI, as well as set precedents regarding the language acceptable for public discourse by officials. The case illustrates the ongoing struggles in public institutions regarding inclusivity and the impacts of language on social dynamics within Lithuania.
