VTEK collects information regarding possible meetings of the dismissed environment vice-minister with lobbyists
The VTEK has decided to gather additional information regarding the former environment vice-minister's conduct that may not comply with lobbying laws in Lithuania.
The Commission for Ethics and Special Investigations (VTEK) held a meeting where they discussed information related to the behavior of the former environment vice-minister Edmundas Mačieža. Allegations have been made regarding potential violations of lobbying regulations in Lithuania during his tenure. In light of this, VTEK is gathering more information to determine whether they should initiate a formal investigation into these claims.
Prior to his dismissal, Mačieža publicly expressed feelings of being marginalized and isolated from decision-making processes within the Ministry concerning forest policy issues. He stated that many decisions were being made without his knowledge, suggesting a breakdown of communication within the Ministry. Following these statements, a member of the government criticized Mačieža, asserting that his claims did not align with reality and subsequently announced that he would be removed from his position.
This situation raises concerns about transparency and accountability within the Lithuanian government, particularly surrounding the conduct of public officials and the influence of lobbyists. The VTEK’s investigation may lead to significant scrutiny of lobbying practices in Lithuania and could potentially reform how such engagements are monitored to prevent conflicts of interest in government decisions.
