The Presidents of Kenya and Uganda Launch the New Phase of the Joint Railway Project
The presidents of Kenya and Uganda have inaugurated the second phase of a rapid railway project aimed at enhancing trade and logistics between the two countries.
Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni officially launched the second phase of a rapid railway project connecting Kenya and Uganda during a ceremony in Kisumu, Kenya. This new railway line, stretching from Kisumu to Malaba on the Kenyan-Ugandan border, is expected to serve as a vital link in the railway network of both nations, facilitating trade and logistics across East Africa. The project is anticipated to reduce transportation costs significantly and ease the movement of goods from Mombasa port to Uganda and neighboring landlocked countries.
The railway line is predicted to act as an economic gateway for the western region and the Lake Victoria Basin, supporting sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and fishing. President Ruto emphasized that the project aligns with a national vision to enhance connectivity within Kenya, lower business operation costs, and solidify the country's role as a trade hub in the Great Lakes region and the African continent. He noted that the previous phase of the project between Narok and Kisumu had already made significant contributions to regional development.
This continued investment in rail infrastructure highlights the increasing importance of connectivity in boosting economic activities in East Africa. By reinforcing transport links between Kenya and Uganda, the railway project is expected to create opportunities for increased trade, improve supply chains, and ultimately stimulate economic growth in the region, benefiting the local populations and reducing barriers to trade across borders.
