Presidents of Kenya and Uganda launch next phase of cross-border railway

Kenya and Uganda have launched a new phase of the Standard Gauge Railway, aimed at enhancing regional transport and integrating East Africa's economies.

On Saturday, Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated a significant extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) at a ceremony in Kibos, Kisumu. This advancement in infrastructure is designed to enhance connectivity between East Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo by linking a crucial 107-kilometre Kisumu-Malaba section. Upon completion, this railway initiative will significantly contribute to a nearly 1,000-kilometre uninterrupted rail corridor stretching from Mombasa to Malaba, ultimately integrating national rail systems with regional connections to Kampala.

The SGR project, funded by China, is anticipated to reach the Uganda border by June of the following year. Its implementation is expected to alleviate heavy traffic on roadways, thereby reducing accidents and transportation costs. This development is a pivotal aspect of East Africa's infrastructure growth, aimed at fostering transnational trade and enhancing economic ties within the region. President Ruto emphasized the importance of this railway project for facilitating trade and travel, addressing the growing demands of East African nations.

Additionally, President Museveni highlighted the strategic intention behind the project, stating that it aims to transfer heavy cargo transport from road to rail. This shift is expected to not only improve efficiency but also enhance the safety of goods transportation across borders. The successful rollout of this railway extension represents a decisive move towards regional integration, impacting the economic landscape and linking markets throughout East Africa.
