The costs have caught up with Ukrainian carriers

Polish transporters are raising concerns over increasing Ukrainian competition in the European market as new registration requirements take effect next year.

Since the signing of the EU transport agreement with Ukraine in mid-2022, Polish carriers have expressed alarm regarding the growing presence of Ukrainian competitors in the European market. In response to pressure from domestic businesses, Polish authorities have introduced a requirement for recording shipments in the SENT system (RMPD – Road Transport Monitoring Register) starting November 1, 2024, for carriers from non-EU countries operating transport in or through Poland. This requirement aims to level the playing field amid the surge in Ukrainian carriers' activities.

In the past year, Ukrainian carriers have stabilized their push into the EU market, with data from the National Revenue Administration (KAS) indicating that the number of trucks registered in Ukraine reached 76,500 in the last quarter of the previous year, mirroring the figures from the same quarter of 2024. This stability suggests a significant and ongoing presence of Ukrainian transporters, prompting Polish firms to seek measures to protect their market share and interests.

The ongoing competition and regulatory changes highlight the broader context of transportation and logistics within the EU, where automation and robotics have become critical areas of development. Polish companies are leading in these fields, showcasing successes among both suppliers and users. As the transport landscape continues to evolve, the impact of policies on competition and industry growth will be crucial for stakeholders across the region.
