Staffing Problems in Road Transport. Too Few Poles are Working
The road transport sector in Poland is facing significant staffing shortages and competition from Ukrainian transport companies, impacting operations and revenue.
The Polish road transport sector has observed a slight increase in freight transportation in 2025, primarily driven by the European market despite challenging economic conditions stemming from the pandemic and ongoing war. However, transport operations towards the east are facing difficulties, largely due to reliance on border transshipment terminals. Compounding these issues is the rising competition from Ukrainian carriers, who can offer services in the EU without special authorization, pressing local companies further.
In the previous year, nearly 10% of international road transport companies were reported to have disappeared from state registries, indicating a troubling trend in the industry. Maciej WroΕski, head of the Transport and Logistics Employers' Organization in Poland, expressed concerns regarding the sector's heavy dependency on foreign drivers. With limitations on migrant workers' access to the labor market, the hiring process can extend up to several months, creating a bottleneck that hinders the sector's growth potential and operational efficiency.
WroΕski calls for urgent improvements in recruitment processes and policy adjustments to better accommodate foreign labor in the transport sector. As these issues persist, Polish road transport companies may need to adopt strategic measures to maintain competitiveness, ensuring they can sustain operations while recovering from the impacts of recent global economic challenges.
