Ukraine's air defences down 234 Russian drones, strikes recorded at 11 locations
Ukrainian air defences successfully intercepted 234 out of 251 drones launched by Russia on March 22-23, with strikes noted at 11 locations across the country.
On the night of March 22-23, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack against Ukraine, deploying 251 drones of various types. Ukraine's air defence systems, however, demonstrated significant effectiveness, successfully downing 234 of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that strikes attributed to 17 UAVs were recorded at 11 different locations, alongside debris falling at eight sites, indicating the scale of the air threat posed by Russia during this operation.
The types of drones used in the attack included Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and others, which were launched from various locations in Russia including Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as from Hvardiiske in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Notably, about 150 of the drones involved were categorized as Shahed loitering munitions, which have become a common tool in Russia's aerial strategy against Ukraine. The ongoing nature of the drone threat was underscored by the Ukrainian Air Force, indicating that the engagement with the remaining drones was still in progress at the time of the report.
The response from Ukraine involved a coordinated effort from various military assets, including aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups. This multi-faceted defence strategy highlights the ongoing conflict and the challenges faced by Ukraine's military as they seek to protect their airspace from relentless Russian attacks. The ability to intercept and neutralize a majority of the enemy drones is crucial for maintaining both civilian safety and military positions during this extended conflict.
