Africa: Over 25 Liberians Complete EU-Funded Scope Africa Port Security Training
Over 25 Liberians have successfully completed a maritime and port security training funded by the European Union as part of the SCOPE Africa program.
In Monrovia, Liberia, more than 25 individuals have completed a specialized training program focused on maritime and port security, funded by the European Union under the SCOPE Africa initiative. This program aims to enhance the safety and operational efficiency of ports in West and Central Africa, particularly targeting the Freeport of Monrovia, as part of a larger €12 million investment from 2026 to 2030. The training included officials from the National Port Authority and other maritime stakeholders, highlighting the collaborative effort to improve regional port security.
The SCOPE Africa program, which stands for Securing Corridors, Ports and Exchanges in Western and Central Africa, is managed by Expertise France and Enabel. It aims to support ten major ports in compliance with international security standards, specifically the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. By enhancing security protocols and operational procedures, the initiative seeks to foster regional cooperation among maritime institutions across the involved countries.
As these Liberians complete their training, they contribute to a broader strategy of improving port security in a region often challenged by security vulnerabilities. The successful execution of this training is expected to not only bolster the capabilities of the National Port Authority of Liberia but also serve as a model for similar initiatives across the region, contributing to safer maritime operations and improved trade facilitation in West and Central Africa.
