Liberia: Lima Commits U.S.$250k to Boost Liberian Football
The Liberia Maritime Authority has pledged $250,000 to enhance grassroots football and strengthen the national team through a partnership with the Liberia Football Association.
In a significant development for Liberian sports, the Liberia Football Association (LFA) and the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) have entered into a $250,000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing grassroots football and providing support to the national team, known as the Lone Star. This MOU was signed at LiMA's headquarters and is part of a broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, which is expected to foster empowerment and national pride among the youth through sports.
LiMA Commissioner and CEO, Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., emphasized that this initiative not only seeks to uplift football in Liberia but also to create genuine opportunities for young Liberians. By linking the nation's maritime economic initiatives with sports, the partnership aims to lay down a framework for development that transcends beyond just athletics, fostering values such as discipline and teamwork among the youth. This demonstrates a commitment from government-linked organizations to invest in national identity and pride through sports.
The LFA's President, Mustapha Raji, described this partnership as groundbreaking, particularly noting the rarity of a government entity providing such robust support to football in the country. The investment is expected to have lasting impacts on the sport at the grassroots level, thereby ensuring a stronger pipeline for talent to the national team. This collaboration could set a precedent for future investments in sports and other sectors, thereby encouraging a stronger connection between public initiatives and community development in Liberia.
