Daylight Saving Time Will Be Introduced in Lithuania This Week

Lithuania will switch to daylight saving time this weekend by moving the clocks one hour forward.

Lithuania will implement daylight saving time by moving the clocks forward one hour this weekend, specifically on the night from Saturday to Sunday at 3 AM. This biannual clock adjustment occurs on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October, when the clocks are turned back one hour for winter time. The change to summer time will last for seven months, ending at the end of October.

The European Union had proposed eliminating the practice of changing the clocks back and forth in 2018, favoring a single time regime. Recently, Spain has reignited discussions about abolishing seasonal time changes, with their transport minister advocating for a permanent switch to summer time. Lithuania's Minister of Transport, Juras Taminskas, expressed support for the idea of maintaining summer time year-round but sees little point in pursuing it at the EU level due to differing opinions among member states.

In a public consultation by the European Commission in 2018, 84% of the 6.4 million Europeans who participated were in favor of eliminating daylight saving time. Although the European Parliament approved a reform regarding this matter in 2019, changes have not yet been implemented, leaving various countries, including Lithuania, to continue adjusting their clocks biannually.
