Florianópolis 353 years: from the author who popularized witch stories to the books set in the 'Island of Magic'

Florianópolis celebrates its 353rd anniversary, with a literary focus on books inspired by the city's rich traditions and legends.

Florianópolis marks its 353rd anniversary this Monday, reflecting on its rich cultural and literary heritage. The city, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant neighborhoods, has inspired numerous authors who have woven its local traditions and folklore into their narratives. The affectionate nickname of 'Island of Magic' stems from this rich tapestry of stories, which have found a place in books, poems, and tales throughout the years.

To celebrate this occasion, G1 curated a list of nine books that offer insights into the essence of the capital of Santa Catarina. The selection features renowned writers like Franklin Cascaes, Cruz e Sousa, and Salim Miguel, as well as emerging authors who have chosen the island and its locals as backdrops for their literary works. This collection not only highlights local talent but also emphasizes the importance of literature in preserving and understanding the city's heritage.

The curation was assisted by professors Zilma Gesser Nunes and Tania Regina Oliveira Ramos from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), ensuring a well-rounded representation of the literary scene in Florianópolis. Among the highlighted works are classics such as 'O Fantástico na Ilha de Santa Catarina' by Franklin Cascaes and contemporary pieces that continue to shape the narrative of this enchanting locale, showcasing the depth and diversity of its literary landscape.
